Occultism
After many years as a doctor and curing many through his medicines, Nostradamus began to practice occultism. This is the belief in the existence of supernatural powers and includes the study of astrology, alchemy, divination, magic, witchery and sorcery. It deals with forces that are beyond human understanding. Nostradamus was an occultist and through his predictions, he was given the title of a ‘seer’. This meant that he was honoured for being a non-religious prophet but also one that claimed his prophecies came from a heavenly source. During his time, occultism was seen as a heresy that the Catholic Church condemned. However, Nostradamus had a strong interest in the subject and hence decided to write prophecies.
